The Hamburger Project is worth the hype

• I had to try it after discovering that the highly-anticipated restaurant sold more than 1,000 burgers in just two days. 

What to expect: The counter service spot is small with just eight seats and only three burgers, fries and a handful of sides on the menu. 

• I tried the Wisconsin butter burger with two juicy patties, which features sauteed onions, their signature secret sauce and whipped butter ($11.95) .I added jalapeños for an extra kick. 
• My husband had a double-pattied Oklahoma fried onion burger that comes with sweet onion and peppadew peppers for the same price.

Pro tip: Drizzle your burger or fries with their house-made yuzu kosho hot sauce for a burst of sweet, citrusy heat. Or opt for a decadent half-ounce side of caviar ($35) to spoon onto every bite. 

The bottom line: While it certainly doesn't outrank Maillards, The Hamburger Project is surely one of the best burger destinations in this part of the city. Don't be discouraged by the tiny space if it's packed – Alamo Square is just a couple blocks away and a great place to enjoy your burger on the go.
