California attorney general vows to protect immigrants from Trump

What they're saying: "It's true that we're entering days, months and years of uncertainty, but one thing is certain: California will remain the beacon of progress that it has always been," Bonta said.

The big picture: California has the largest share of undocumented immigrants in the U.S., with about 1.8 million as of 2022. The state and several cities, including San Francisco and Los Angeles, have "sanctuary laws" in place that limit cooperation with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Between the lines: State law prevents police, sheriff's deputies and public places like libraries, schools and hospitals from sharing legal statuses or other compromising information with federal agents that could be used for immigration enforcement.

• Per the state's guidelines, these institutions must also provide resources on immigration rights and train staff and volunteers on how to respond to enforcement-related requests.

• The goal is to ensure undocumented residents can continue to safely occupy these public places, Bonta said.

Catch up quick: Bonta's comments come just two days after California lawmakers convened at the urging of Gov. Gavin Newsom for a special legislative session focused on protecting the state's progressive laws from Trump's conservative agenda.

• The governor proposed creating a $25 million legal defense fund for the Department of Justice and other state agencies to challenge federal litigation or enforcement action.
