Scott Wiener takes on the DMV over San Fran usage

• Calling them "upsetting references to the City that no self-respecting San Franciscan would ever use — as in truly never," he demands an immediate cease and desist. (You'll get a kick out of reading the whole thing.)

San Franciscans are gentle people, but the flowers in our hair come out quickly when The City is so egregiously misnamed. One lifelong resident, upon learning that her daughter had received one of the offending licenses, promptly advised the young woman to "burn it."

As for Wiener's list of acceptable references?

• San Francisco is preferred, of course, but SF, The City, City by the Bay and Best City In the World are also acceptable.

Between the lines: Obviously Wiener is poking fun with his letter, but it's true "San Fran" is probably what San Franciscans would consider the most detestable nickname for their city.

• One Urban Dictionary entry even calls the nickname "the most annoying way possible to refer to ... San Francisco. Even more annoying than calling it Frisco."

For the record: The DMV told news outlets it's since corrected the abbreviation and that it agrees a "no-nonsense 'San Francisco' works best on a driver's license."
