Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh dies at 84

Phil Lesh, founding member of the Grateful Dead, passed away Friday at 84.
The big picture: Lesh, born in Berkeley in 1940 and a classically trained musician, is largely credited with steering the Grateful Dead's experimental sound and redefining the role of the bass — despite never once touching the instrument before joining the band.
His cause of death was not disclosed, but a statement posted to his social media noted that he was "surrounded by his family and full of love."
Context: Lesh played a pivotal role in creating the band's eclectic style — what he called "electric chamber music" — in the 1960s, fusing elements of psychedelia with blues, jazz, reggae and more.
- "When Phil's happening the band's happening," lead guitarist Jerry Garcia once said.
Between the lines: Lesh continued to keep the Grateful Dead alive after Garcia's death in 1995, performing with the band's offshoots (The Other Ones and The Dead) as well as his own band (Phil Lesh and Friends).
- He co-headlined two tours with Bob Dylan and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994.
- In 1998, Lesh underwent a liver transplant due to a chronic hepatitis C infection and became an outspoken advocate for organ donor programs.
He was the oldest and one of the longest-surviving members, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
