San Francisco unveils new Bayview-Hunter's Point park project

New park alert: The southern half of India Basin Waterfront Park is now open to visitors.

Why it matters: It's the first phase of a project developing the former brownfield into a 10-acre park, made possible by a $200 million environmental justice investment aiming to connect Bayview-Hunter's Point — a historically Black neighborhood — to a healthy shoreline and waterfront access.

Driving the news: In addition to its winding trails and beautiful views, it features a food pavilion for local vendors and community cooking classes, a makers' shop for boat building projects and an operations building.

The park also features two new public piers, a floating dock, restrooms and a 5,580-square-foot ground mural titled Lady Bayview by Raylene Gorum, an artist with family roots in the Bayview.

What's next: Construction crews will begin improvements to the nearby India Basin Shoreline Park, which was originally constructed in the 1990s.

New amenities will include a gravel beach, a cookout terrace and grilling area, a new boathouse, a renovated children's play area, two new basketball courts, an adult fitness station and more.
