Injuries involving electric scooters and electric bikes jumped over 3,000% in the U.S. between 2017 and 2022, according to a new UCSF study.
Researchers recorded nearly 2.5 million bicycle injuries, over 304,000 scooter injuries, almost 45,600 e-bicycle injuries and more than 189,000 e-scooter injuries in the time frame.
The study found that helmet usage is lower among these electric vehicle users and that risky behaviors, like riding under the influence, are more common.
What they're saying: "There are undeniable health and environmental benefits to micromobility vehicle use, but structural changes must be taken to promote safe riding," co-lead author Adrian Fernandez said in a news release.
