Smash burgers are all the rage, but word on the street is that the best one in San Francisco comes from Maillards.

Driving the news: San Francisco Chronicle restaurant critic Cesar Hernandez recently crowned the top three best smash burgers in the Bay Area.

• Maillards, which you can find either at the Outer Sunset farmers market on Sundays or Heritage Restaurant & Bar on Tuesdays, is the second-best in the Bay and first in San Francisco, according to Hernandez.

What they're saying: "The paper-thin patties have a bright sheen with a seductive, delicate crunch," Hernandez writes. "Instead of grilled onions, the burger luminary pivots to another allium: shallots, which bring pronounced savoriness."
