SDFC breaks another MLS record in inaugural season

San Diego FC set a new MLS expansion team record for most wins and points in a single season with its 4-2, come-from-behind victory over the Houston Dynamo FC on Saturday.

Why it matters: In its inaugural MLS season, SDFC is making its mark — and with a playoff spot secured, the team isn't done yet.

By the numbers: Notching 18 wins so far, mostly on the road, SDFC surpassed St. Louis City's 2023 record.

The team has 60 points, with one game left in the regular season, keeping San Diego atop the Western Conference for now.
Averaging about 28,000 fans per match, SDFC ranks fourth for MLS attendance, and first among clubs without NFL stadiums.
The club's first home match drew 34,506 fans, setting a Snapdragon Stadium attendance record.

What they're saying: "Nobody can take that away from us; that's written down right now until somebody else breaks it," coach Mikey Varas said at a post-game press conference about the record-setting win.

Fun fact: SDFC jerseys and merchandise have been flying off the shelves — the team says it broke the all-time MLS annual retail sales record earlier this year.

The intrigue: The new club is already investing in its future, opening the league's first residential youth academy in late September to build a pipeline for rising talent. It's the first program of its kind in the league.

What's next: After a break for international play, SDFC closes out the regular season on Oct. 18 against the Portland Timbers in Oregon.

Then, it's playoff time.
San Diego will host at least one first-round game for the 2025 MLS Cup at Snapdragon Stadium.
