Frontwave Arena hosts inaugural SI Women's Games

Some of the world's most elite athletes will compete at Oceanside's Frontwave Arena this fall in the SI Women's Games, Sports Illustrated's new biennial event.

Why it matters: San Diego is part of a women's sports surge, as new professional teams and leagues are launching, viewership and fandom is booming, and more investors are betting on the fast-growing market.

Driving the news: The WNBA's Dearica Hamby, Olympic gymnast Jade Carey, tennis star Sloane Stephens, and Mexican flag football pro Diana Flores are among the 120+ athletes who will compete, SI announced Thursday.

Tickets ($25+) go on sale Sunday for the six-day event that will run Oct. 28-Nov. 2.

Zoom in: Each day will feature competitions between Team Americas (Canada, U.S., Latin America, etc.) and Team World (Europe, Africa, Asia, etc.) in seven different sports.

Flag football, which will make its Olympic debut at the 2028 LA Games, kicks things off with a three-game series on day one.
It's followed by wrestling and judo matches, volleyball and basketball games, singles and doubles tennis matches, and gymnasts compete on floor, beam, bars and vault on the following days.
The events will be broadcast live on the ION Network, and streamed on Prime Video.

The intrigue: A free Frontwave Fan Zone will be open before and after games, hosting athlete meet and greets, youth sports clinics and vendors.

Between the lines: This new event shows the storied sports magazine's revitalization propelled by Minute Media's takeover last year.
