Food banks launch summer food drive and free meal programs

Between the lines: The need is more prevalent in the summer when students can't rely on free lunch or breakfast at school.

• Meanwhile, senior food assistance requests have doubled since 2023, according to the food bank.

How to help: Purchase a $5 "Hunger Bag" at Albertsons, Vons and Pavilions grocery stores throughout the county through July 6.

• Donate nonperishable items (particularly canned meats, peanut butter, oatmeal, hearty soups and stews) in the red barrels at those stores through August 5.
• Make an online donation, with $1 equal to two meals.
• Host a virtual food drive.

State of play: Feeding San Diego and San Diego Unified also provide free meals for students and families at schools, libraries, rec centers and other locations throughout the summer.
