San Diego shoppers are big fans of Albertsons, which has by far the most grocery stores in the area.
State of shopping: With about 70 locations around the county, the grocery giant has 21% of the market share based on sales, according to the latest data from the Chain Store Guide.
- That includes the 45 Vons and Pavilions in the area, which were Safeway brands before Albertsons acquired the company in 2016.
- Albertsons had been looking to merge with Kroger in a $25 billion deal that would've boosted the local market share even higher. But the company terminated that agreement and sued Kroger following federal and state court decisions blocking the deal.
The intrigue: Locals also like to buy in bulk as Costco is the second most popular grocery store. The one on Morena Boulevard, which opened in 1976 as Price Club, is the retail giant's original store.
- Plus, Northgate González Market, an authentic Mexican grocer, made the top 10.
Between the lines: Nationwide, people are stocking up at supermarkets as the price of groceries could soar with tariffs.
Editor's note: This story, headline, and chart have been corrected to reflect that Alberstons — including its Pavilions and Vons stores — has the largest share of San Diego's grocery market (not Costco).
