Pittsburgh is getting a double dose of romance with two new bookstores just blocks apart.
Why it matters: Romance novels dominate bestseller lists, but the genre hasn't always enjoyed equivalent cultural respect.
- Dedicated bookstores offer space for readers to swap swoony favorites and build community.
State of play: Passionate Pages opened at 4304 Butler St. in Lawrenceville earlier this year, and The Shelf Love Society will open April 11 at 4745 Butler St.
Zoom in: If you love "Heated Rivalry," "Fourth Wing" or Emily Henry, there's plenty to explore at Passionate Pages.
- From romantasy to historical romance, young adult and LGBTQ+ titles, modern romance novels have widened their lens, moving beyond the old mass-market covers of windswept couples and half-unbuttoned heroes — although there's still love for the classics.
- Many of today's romance novels center diverse characters, identities and storylines.
What they're saying: "Romance has had an unfair reputation in the literary world, but it's popular and there's something for everyone now," said Angie Davis, a dark romance fan leafing through books at Passionate Pages recently. "I hope we're finally starting to shake the stigma with stores like this."
By the numbers: The market for romance novels has been on the rise since 2021, and it's still hot, per industry tracker Circana BookScan. That's driven partly by TV adaptations and #BookTok drawing in younger readers.
- In the first five months of 2025, romance print sales were up 24% compared with the same period in 2024, Circana reported last June, and the volume of romance books had more than doubled compared with 2021.
Zoom out: Genre-specific bookstores are hitting their stride, debuting in places like Chicago, Minneapolis, Indianapolis, Austin and Charlotte.
If you go: Passionate Pages is open Wednesday-Thursday 10am-6pm, 11am-7pm Friday-Saturday, and 11am-5pm Sunday. Closed Mondays and Tuesdays.
- The Shelf Love Society's grand opening is April 11 from 10am-7pm.
