Why it matters: Vinyl fever is spinning fast across the nation, making affordable records harder to find.
State of play: Demand started to surge after the COVID-19 pandemic, and now large retailers are selling new releases and classic albums for $30 or higher.
Zoom in: Nostalgia-obsessed Southwest Pennsylvania has no shortage of independent record stores, and several still have some new and gently used albums that won't break the bank.
Here are our favorite record stores in the area:
The Attic
- Large selection across the shop, filled with nooks and crannies. High-quality records with a mix of new and used albums. It can get very crowded on weekends.
- 513 Grant Ave., Millvale
Dorsey's Record Shop
- Great picks of R&B, gospel, hip-hop and more. Dorsey's also offers digital services like transferring VHS tapes to DVDs.
- 7614 Frankstown Ave., Homewood
InnerGroove Record Store
- A bit out of the way in Beaver County, but this cozy shop has a great curation and some of the most affordable prices in the region.
- 1307 Pennsylvania Ave., Monaca
The Government Center
- New releases, classics, and a dollar bin outside. Not to mention an in-house coffee shop during the day, a fun bar in the evening and a live music venue.
- 715 East St., North Side
Get Hip Recordings
- This hard-to-find store in an industrial park brings fans from hours away to peruse its collection, particularly its rock and metal albums.
- 1800 Columbus Ave., North Side
Gratitude Records
- Tucked in the back of the Clothes Minded thrift store, this tiny record shop has amazing deals on classic rock, jazz, soul and R&B. It's very well-organized.
- 4740 Liberty Ave., Bloomfield
Groove Gallery and Records
- Two blocks down the street from Gratitude, this new record shop has very knowledgeable owners who can direct you to great finds. Records are in the back rooms past the gallery.
- 4623 Liberty Ave., Bloomfield
Jerry's Records
- This institution has the biggest selection in town. Multiple massive rooms of just about anything you want, though with less of a focus on newer records.
- 2136 Murray Ave., Squirrel Hill
Pleasant Dreams
- Punk and alt-rock fans, this one's for you. It also has a nice selection of other physical media, like VHS and cassette tapes.
- 3138 Dobson St., Polish Hill
Rosie's Records
- Second-floor space with new and used records and the eponymous Rosie, the most adorable French bulldog in the city. Great place to find new vinyl if you want to avoid the chains.
- 5401 Butler St., Lawrenceville
Vinyl Remains
- Smaller shop with friendly service that lets you browse in peace. Good prices and a fun collection of classics from the '50s, '60s and '70s, as well as some new releases.
- 692 Washington Road, Mt. Lebanon
