Vinegar Syndrome has expanded its brick-and-mortar footprint with a new South Side shop, one of only a handful the film restoration and physical media company operates nationwide.
Why it matters: As Gen Z's tastes shift, yesterday's formats feel newly relevant.
- Frustrated by streaming's uneven quality, ads and the sheer number of paid platforms, younger movie fans are rediscovering physical media — standing alongside millennials and Gen X in bringing discs back into rotation.
The big picture: The Connecticut-based studio specializes in restoring and releasing overlooked feature films from the 1960s through the 1980s.
- Working with the Museum of Modern Art, the Academy Film Archive, the Library of Congress and more, Vinegar Syndrome says it has digitally preserved more than 500 films that may have otherwise been lost to decay.

Zoom in: Opened late last year at 1410 E. Carson St., the shop is stocked with Blu-rays, DVDs, vinyl, and VHS films, mixing Vinegar Syndrome releases with boutique-label gems, used titles, and a deep bench of hard-to-find classics.
- The shop also buys media. I sold some old horror soundtracks and VHS copies of "Goosebumps" and "Halloween" for $25, then rolled that cash into a restoration of the action-comedy "Lady Reporter," a tongue-in-cheek pick with some genuinely funny moments, and a copy of John Carpenter's "In the Mouth of Madness."
The intrigue: "Vinegar syndrome" is the chemical reaction that causes old film to deteriorate and discolor over time.

💠My thought bubble: When content is instant and unlimited, it's harder for any single film to stick, especially in the age of scrolling.
- That's why so many of us feel nostalgic for movie nights of the '80s and '90s: the Blockbuster ritual of leaving the house, roaming the aisles, and choosing a movie to watch together.
If you go: Vinegar Syndrome Pittsburgh is at 1410 E. Carson St. on the South Side.
- Wednesday-Sunday noon-7pm.
