Report: Miami ranks 38th for safe streets

Miami's roadways rank 38th among the country's largest metros in safety, according to StreetLight Data's new "U.S. Safe Streets Index."

The intrigue: Miami has a bit of a reputation for its reckless drivers and frequent crashes, so we're just as surprised as you to learn the 305 doesn't rank dead last.

Tampa Bay ranked 50th.

How it works: The rankings are based on five key factors: vehicle miles traveled, different speeds between vehicles, speed-based pedestrian risk, speeding in residential zones and truck activity.

Driving the news: The Miami-Fort Lauderdale-West Palm Beach region ranked 94th for speed differential risk, which measures speed variation among vehicles on the same roads, a factor that increases the likelihood of collisions.

The region ranked 71st in speed-based pedestrian risk, or how often walkers encounter fast, high-volume traffic above 30 mph.
The region's top score was in vehicle miles traveled (6th!), the highest weighted factor in StreetLight Data's rankings.
