New billboards target rising costs of ICE operations

• On Tuesday, an anti-Palantir protest is expected in front of the company's new headquarters in Aventura.
• The controversial tech giant, which announced its move to Miami last month, has faced continued backlash for its strong ties to ICE.

Meanwhile, Miami commissioners face continued calls for the city to undo its 287(g) agreement with the agency — a move Mayor Eileen Higgins has said she supports.

The big picture: The billboards are among more than 200 that went up across the country Monday, part of the "ICE Costs Us" campaign.

• It's backed by the Mijente Support Committee, a nonprofit working to grow the collective power of Latino, Chicano and Caribbean communities. The group is also an organizer of the Palantir protest.
• The billboards, located at I-595 (east of I-95 facing west) and NE Second Avenue (south of NE 55th Street, facing south) will be displayed for four months.

Zoom in: "Your Tax $ Wasted" is included on every billboard, along with a photo and various claims about ICE's spending.

Between the lines: The billboards come as state lawmakers have quietly acknowledged Floridians may be on the hook financially for immigration detention sites like Alligator Alcatraz.

• The state acknowledged in court filings last month that the promised federal reimbursement of $608 million is only "likely" and may not materialize, the Miami Herald reported.
