Google co-founder buys 2 Miami homes for $173M amid wealth tax fears

Google co-founder Larry Page recently paid $173.4 million for two Coconut Grove estates as he and other California billionaires consider leaving the Golden State over a proposed wealth tax there, according to multiple reports.
The big picture: An influential billionaire can leave their mark on a city, as Miami has seen with Citadel CEO Ken Griffin.
- Since Griffin bought a home in the Grove and relocated his company to Miami in 2022, he has donated $100 million to local hospitals and committed $50 million to help bring the charter school Success Academy to Miami-Dade County.
Stunning stat: Page's $101.5 million December purchase of Banyan Ridge, a 4.5-acre waterfront compound, was the fourth most expensive home sale in the U.S. last year, according to Redfin.
- Miami-Dade had two sales in the top 10. The other: a $74.3 million home on La Gorce Island in Miami Beach.
- Page also purchased a $71.9 million Coconut Grove estate on Jan. 5, the Wall Street Journal reported.
Zoom out: Florida's ultra-luxury market saw 19 sales over $50 million in 2025, compared to 12 in New York and 10 in California, the Journal reported, citing figures from real estate appraisal firm Miller Samuel.
The intrigue: Page, whom Bloomberg estimates is worth $276 billion, may not be the only new billionaire coming to town.
- His fellow Google co-founder Sergey Brin — worth a Bloomberg-estimated $257 billion — is reportedly shopping for a home in Miami, per the Wall Street Journal and The Real Deal.
What they're saying: Dina Goldentayer of real estate firm Douglas Elliman told the Journal that she's showing Miami properties to clients from the San Francisco Bay Area "pretty much every other day."
- "Every conversation I overhear, they're talking about the wealth tax and how it's retroactive. They're in a hurry and they're all looking at the same houses."
- California's proposed ballot measure would require residents with more than $1 billion to be taxed the equivalent of 5% of their assets, per the New York Times.
