The famed Lincoln Road clock tower will soon light up once again.
Why it matters: The digital clock mounted atop 407 Lincoln Road was a Miami Beach landmark for over 60 years before it began to malfunction in 2020.
The latest: Euroamerican Group, which owns the office building, tells Axios it replaced the four-sided clock and updated it from halogen to LED technology.
- The new version aims to honor the original 1950s design, the firm tells Axios.
- The age of the original clock made it difficult to secure parts to repair it, the group has said.
Zoom in: The new clock — which will also display the temperature as the original did — was installed in November and should begin normal operation in mid-December after testing is complete, the firm tells Axios.
Flashback: The new design is more understated than the futuristic design that developer Michael Shvo proposed in 2022.
- At the time, Shvo had planned to purchase the building, but he never did, the Euroamerican Group tells Axios.
The big picture: The replacement of the clock — and the renovation of the office building's interior spaces and exterior features — is the latest upgrade announced for Lincoln Road.
- The city of Miami Beach is leading a nearly $30 million project to spruce up the outdoor shopping promenade with new pedestrian areas, sidewalk cafe seating and an outdoor performance space.
