Huntsville's last City Council meeting of the year was right in line with 2025's big stories: annexation and development.
Why it matters: Huntsville continues growing, and on Thursday, the city annexed more than 724 acres and approved a rezoning for the 380-acre Westmoore Landing development.
Catch up quick: The three annexations included a 1.41-acre single-family home and 36.54 acres on the south side of Martin Road for a single-family residential development.
The largest one, set for a commercial and industrial development, per the city, is 686.46 acres on U.S. 72 East near Gurley.
Zoom in: Westmoore Landing, which Thomas Nunez, manager of planning services, said Thursday could take up to 30 years to fully build out, aims to construct thousands of homes on Huntsville's western edge.
David Horwath, president of Land Innovations, said the development earned a support letter from the Singing River Trail, which borders the property along the Wheeler Wildlife Refuge, for its water treatment and sustainability efforts.
Those include coordinated access points to Limestone Bay and educational components for the public on impacts to the refuge and Tennessee River watershed.
