Plans to zone about 381 acres off Interstate 65 on Huntsville's western edge are moving forward.
Why it matters: The $2.2-billion Westmoore Landing project hopes to construct thousands of homes on nearly 400 acres the city annexed early this year in Limestone County.
Catch up quick: Huntsville City Council will vote Dec. 18 on zoning 380.93 acres to Planned Development-Housing District at the intersection of I-65 and I-565.
- The development is using a transect plan, per information from the council's Nov. 20 agenda, "a geographical cross-section ... to guide urban planning and development," also known as Form-Based Code.
- Those transects dictate uses and character of the buildings, from denser, mixed-use-focused town center transects to open, residence-focused neighborhoods scaled to match surrounding residential areas.
Zoom in: The development will be accessed from Highway 20, but plans also call for realignment and improvements to Belle Tower Road where it intersects with the project.
- Belle Tower Road will also provide the development access to interstate bridges to the south and dedicated access to Arrowhead Landing and TVA land.
What they're saying: Meredith, who represents the westernmost portions of the city, said the planning department has "gone above and beyond many different times in order to get this to the council."
