Melat Kiros sails to victory in 1st District seat

The latest: Kiros led by 78.3% of the vote over independent Shimon Blau and Republican Christy Peterson, per the AP.

State of play: A Democratic Socialists of America-backed candidate, Kiros parlayed her primary upset over longtime incumbent Diana DeGette into a successful general election campaign.

• She'll arrive in Congress at age 29 — among its youngest members.

Zoom in: An attorney and former barista, Kiros campaigned on improving affordability, backing Medicare for All, ending U.S. involvement in foreign conflicts and abolishing ICE.

• She faced criticism over remarks some members of Colorado's Jewish community characterized as offensive. Her campaign said it worked to address those concerns.

Between the lines: Despite the party's call for unity, Kiros didn't have unanimous support from fellow Democrats, with multiple candidates expressing concerns about past comments she'd made.

• Along with similar insurgent candidates across the country, Kiros' win showed some voters wanted candidates who could more directly combat President Trump's policies.

The bottom line: Kiros faces a new test: Translating her platform into policy while navigating divisions within her own party.
