Colorado ski resorts are celebrating their first dusting of snow ahead of a possible late-October start to the season.
Why it matters: It's time to get stoked for winter.
The vibe: The best hype you can hope for to start the season are ski and snowboard movies at local theaters.
- Here's a rundown of the films and where to watch them.
"Actually, It Is Rocket Science." The Teton Gravity Research film is a can't-miss each year. Now in its 31st year, the film showcases top skiers performing mind-blowing tricks on mind-blowing mountains.
- If you go: The film shows in Colorado 13 times, with local stops Friday in Boulder and next Tuesday in Lakewood. Other screenings are Sept. 30–Nov. 1 in Denver and Oct. 3 in Longmont.
"Mountain in My Mind 4." The documentary brings attention to suicide in mountain towns and raises money for prevention efforts. The full-length film includes footage taken over a two-year period and pulls back the curtain on director and producer John Padilla's ski journey.
- If you go: The doc shows Saturday in Denver and includes remarks from Padilla
"The Way Out." From Colorado creators Matchstick Productions comes one of the premier films this season, featuring heli-skiing footage from Alaska and British Columbia, and deep powder from Japan and Switzerland.
- If you go: The premiere is Oct. 3 in Crested Butte, but closer to home, the tour lands Oct. 8 in Denver and Oct. 12 in Golden.
"Girl Winter." This collection of "femme-forward and gender-nonconforming films" aims to highlight new voices and talent. A Q&A with the filmmakers and athletes follows.
- If you go: The tour arrives Oct. 14 in Denver, Oct. 15–16 in Boulder and Nov. 11 in Colorado Springs.
"Days Off." The 77th Warren Miller film takes a different approach this year, looking at what the world's best skiers and snowboarders do when the cameras aren't rolling, all narrated by the hilarious Katie Burrell.
- If you go: The film screens Nov. 5 in Nederland, Nov. 6 in Cañon City, Nov. 7 in Colorado Springs (two showings), Nov. 10 in Lakewood, Nov. 12-14 in Boulder, Nov. 19 in Golden, Nov. 20-21 in Denver and Nov. 23-25 in Lone Tree.
