El Paso ranks No. 2 for clean energy jobs on Eastern Plains

Driving the news: El Paso had about 2,100 clean energy workers in 2024 — the second highest total among the 21 counties studied by the Colorado Solar and Storage Association and up from 509 in 2010.

• Only Weld County had more, with about 2,700 workers.
• El Paso's average industry wage reached $85,138, up from $53,654 in 2010 and above the regional average.

What they're saying: "My community is looking for reliable, affordable energy. We are also looking for well-paying jobs, entrepreneurial opportunities and a thriving economy," said state Rep. Amy Paschal (D-Colorado Springs) in a statement.

Yes, but: Where the county lags on the Eastern Plains is how much renewable energy it actually produces.

• Renewables account for 35.8% of the county's 1,600 megawatts of total capacity. Nonrenewable facilities provide 1,023 megawatts.

The big picture: Colorado's Eastern Plains are the center of Colorado's renewable energy buildout, with a $6.3 billion economic impact and more than 7,800 employees.

• The region has 74 renewable energy facilities, 24 nonrenewable facilities and two storage facilities — and accounts for 90% of Colorado's renewable energy capacity.
• "The Eastern Plains have become a model for how solar and wind development can create lasting jobs and revenue for communities that need them most," said KC Becker, the association's CEO.

What's next: The industry's economic impact on the Plains is projected to grow another $1.7 billion.

• El Paso County is forecast to add 199 industry jobs by 2035.
