The Democratic attorney general primary is a crowded contest.
Why it matters: The attorney general is a high-profile position in the Trump era.
- The term-limited Attorney General Phil Weiser has filed more than 60 lawsuits against the administration.
- The office also handles a litany of issues, including consumer protection and anti-trust cases.
State of play: Secretary of State Jena Griswold is leading the four-way contest against Boulder County District Attorney Michael Dougherty, former assistant U.S. attorney Hetal Doshi and progressive nonprofit leader and attorney David Seligman.
- Griswold built her brand around defending elections and challenging efforts to overturn the 2020 election by President Trump and his allies.
Yes, but: Griswold has faced accusations that she inflated her resume and criticism for her lack of courtroom experience.
The other side: All three other candidates have extensive legal experience, often in the courtroom.
- Dougherty prosecuted the King Soopers shooter and is handling the Pearl Street firebombing case. He previously worked in the Manhattan district attorney's office.
- Doshi is a former assistant U.S. attorney for Colorado with civil and criminal courtroom experience at the state and federal levels.
- Seligman is the executive director of Towards Justice, a progressive legal and labor rights organization, who has experience before state and federal courts across the country.
What we're watching: With four candidates, the winning Democratic candidates may not receive even half the vote, putting them in a vulnerable position entering the general election.
