King Soopers opens its new Virginia Village store on Wednesday — just a mile from the Belcaro location it replaces.

State of play: The Kroger-owned grocer is betting shoppers will follow it to a bigger, amenity-packed store at 4201 E. Arkansas Ave. after the longtime Belcaro location closed for good yesterday.

Context: The new 103,00-square-foot store offers full grocery service plus extras like sushi, gourmet Murray's Cheese, a Starbucks and a drive-up pharmacy.

What we're watching: The former site on Colorado Boulevard is slated to become a four-story apartment complex with about 327 units, per the city's planning and development office.

If you go: A ribbon-cutting starts at 8:30am Wednesday. Shoppers can expect giveaways, samples and a gift card raffle.
