Why Denver wants to buy a state-owned building

State of play: The 91,470-square-foot building's proximity to transit, schools, grocery stores and job opportunities makes it an ideal property, officials told City Council members during a committee meeting.

Yes, but: Councilmember Flor Alvidrez questioned whether it makes sense to buy an office building that may not ultimately be suitable for conversion into housing.

• The city will get a clearer picture of the building's redevelopment potential during a bidding process for the site, city real estate director Lisa Lumley said Tuesday.

The lot itself is valuable for future housing development, Lumley added.

Between the lines: The funds for the purchase come from the $45 million earmarked for affordable housing in the Vibrant Bond package approved by voters last November.

What's next: Denver City Council could make a final decision on the sale as early as next month.
