RTD CEO Debra Johnson to step down

Driving the news: Johnson sent a letter to employees on Wednesday saying she won't extend her contract beyond May 2027, after turning down an offer from RTD's board last month.

What they're saying: "This region is made better by the contributions of this agency's passionate employees," Johnson said in her letter, adding she plans to help recruit her replacement.

• "The agency is in a much better place because of her dedication," RTD board chair Patrick O'Keefe said in a statement, adding Johnson helped improve safety, security and other major concerns.

Catch up quick: She took the job in November 2020 after serving as deputy CEO of Long Beach Transit for more than six years. She previously worked for transit agencies in Los Angeles, San Francisco and Washington, D.C.

• Johnson earns a $315,000 annual salary, per the Denver Gazette.

Zoom out: RTD serves more than 3 million people across the Front Range, spanning more than 40 municipalities in and around Denver.
