Denver council advances police mask ban

Denver City Council tentatively approved a bill that would make it illegal for police officers — including federal immigration agents — to wear face coverings while operating in the city.

Friction point: A Department of Homeland Security spokesperson told Axios last month the agency would not comply if the measure becomes law — setting up a potential clash between Denver and the federal government.

State of play: The measure passed unanimously on "first reading," clearing the first hurdle before a final vote sends it to Mayor Mike Johnston's desk.

Backers say the ban will improve transparency and responds to public calls to take action on ICE.
Johnston backs the proposal, his office tells us.

Caveat: The bill includes exemptions for undercover officers, SWAT teams and tactical operations.

Driving the news: Bill sponsors say the proposal was spurred by federal agents, including ICE officers, who have increasingly worn face masks during enforcement actions amid President Trump's intensified immigration crackdown.

The other side: The administration argues face coverings protect officers from doxxing and ensure their safety while carrying out operations.

What's next: A final vote takes place March 2.
