Denver's odds of a white Christmas don't look good

Yes, but: There's hope — at least out West.

• From Dec. 25-28, meteorologists at Boulder-based OpenSnow say the mountains could see "moderate or even significant" snow totals — a much-needed gift given Colorado's snowpack is nearing record-low levels.

Between the lines: To qualify as a "white Christmas," you need at least 1 inch of snow on the ground, per the NWS.

By the numbers: Denver meets that standard about 37% of the time, based on weather service data dating back to 1900. But the odds of snow actually falling on Christmas Day are even less, at about 14%.

The bottom line: This has been a historically warm year, with many new records set across Colorado, so Santa may want to lose a layer before touching down in Denver.
