The big picture: It's been a dream start for the Broncos, who stand 7-2, atop the AFC West, and undefeated at home thanks to an elite defense and clutch offensive play.

The last time Denver started off this hot was — well, we won't jinx it.

State of play: Denver hosts the Las Vegas Raiders Thursday in a mid-week rivalry showdown to start a critical, back-to-back divisional game series culminating against the Kansas City Chiefs on Nov. 16.

Thursday's game airs at 6:15pm on Denver7.

Context: Quarterback Bo Nix leads the NFL's best fourth-quarter team —a testament to his formidable composure even while trailing, but also a frustrating reminder of the offense's early-game struggles.

Yes, but: Special teams could improve. The unit had a field goal blocked and missed a punt return against the Houston Texans last week, though kicker Will Lutz is enjoying a phenomenal year.

And Nix, despite his stellar play, doesn't rank among the NFL's top QBs for passer rating, which helps measure a quarterback's overall performance.

The bottom line: During an NFL season without a clear Super Bowl favorite, Broncos fans are surely asking themselves, "Why not us?"
