A new batch of census data is shedding light on poverty in Denver.
Why it matters: The city's poverty rate has increased over the last five years to 8.5%, according to the latest American Community Survey from the U.S. Census Bureau.
By the numbers: Children and seniors are most susceptible to living in poverty, and likewise for those without a high school diploma.
How it works: The census uses an income threshold to determine whether a household is below the poverty level.
The threshold is adjusted for inflation and changes depending on household size and number of children.
