New documentary offers raw look at homelessness in Denver

Why it matters: The film promises a raw, unfiltered look at how people experiencing homelessness find hope and resilience in the face of catastrophic circumstances.

State of play: The half-hour documentary will make its debut at the MCA Denver's Holiday Theater and feature a panel discussion with its creators, Adam Lipsius and Minyoung Sohn.

• Sohn is the founder of Blue Room Housing, a Denver-based developer that in June received $3.8 million from the state to build affordable housing in the buzzy Art District on Santa Fe.

Context: In October 2020, Lipsius and Sohn spoke to over 100 people experiencing homelessness who lived in places like Civic Center Park, 16th Street and on Broadway.

What they're saying: "These stories are messy, painful, and sometimes contradictory — and that's what makes them real," the doc's editor and producer John DeFazio said in a statement.

If you go: Tickets for the 7pm screening start at $11.79, with proceeds going to Dry Bones, a Denver-based nonprofit helping homeless youth.

What's next: The doc will air on Oct. 30 on Rocky Mountain PBS at 7:30pm.
