Avs players to watch in the 4 Nations tournament

A midseason international hockey tournament starting Wednesday in Montreal will feature four Colorado Avalanche stars, though none will represent the Stars and Stripes.

Zoom in: The 4 Nations Face-Off tournament is effectively replacing the NHL's All-Star Game this year, a format that's grown increasingly unpopular among fans across sports leagues.

Context: Canada, Finland, Sweden and the U.S. are participating, with each country getting 23 players for its respective roster.

The USA and Canada are tied for best odds to win the tournament, per BetMGM.

State of play: Colorado forward Nathan MacKinnon joins defensemen Cale Makar and Devon Toews to represent Team Canada, while forward Artturi Lehkonen will play for Finland.

Between the lines: Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Jaccob Slavin, who grew up in Erie, Colorado, will suit up for the U.S.

How it works: All four teams will play three games. The two teams with the best records will then play a one-game final at Boston's TD Garden on Feb. 20.

How to watch: TNT will air Canada vs. Sweden Wednesday at 6pm.

Team USA will face Finland Thursday at 6pm on ESPN.
