When Denver can expect its first snow

Zoom in: Koopmeiners, who's based in Boulder, says this weekend's storm expected to dump up to four inches of snow in the mountains could result in rain for metro Denver. 

Yes, but: Cooler temperatures are expected in the region due to the storm.

• Snow isn't expected in places below 7,000 feet.

Flashback: Last year's first snowfall date — measuring at least 0.1 inches  — was Oct. 28.

• 2019 was the last time snow first fell in mid-October, though it did arrive in early September 2020, per NWS records.

What's next: The NWS encourages people traveling in the mountains to be prepared for wintry conditions.

Our thought bubble: Growing up in Aurora, Halloween often marked the first major snowfall of the season.

• We'd bundle up in layers to go out, and snow sometimes cut trick-or-treating short — something kids likely won't encounter this year.
