Colorado's early vote trends lower ahead of primary election

By the numbers: Just 14% of the state's 4.4 million registered voters had cast ballots through Sunday, the secretary of state reports.

• In 2020, the most recent even-year election, primary turnout reached 27% at this point. In 2022, it stood at 16.5%.

Between the lines: Only one statewide race is on the ballot this year, the Democratic contest for University of Colorado at-large regent.

• However, four Republican congressional battles across the state are drawing major interest.

The intrigue: In the 4th Congressional District, where U.S. Rep. Lauren Boebert is leading a pack of six candidates, turnout is much higher at 18%, the state reports.

• Douglas County, the wealthy suburb south of Denver, accounts for roughly half the vote.
