For the second-straight year, Luna leads the pack as the top dog name in Colorado, per new data from Camp Bow Wow, a Westminster-based chain of doggy day care centers.
Other dog names marking their territory on the state's chart include:
- Charlie
- Daisy
- Lucy
- Cooper
Zoom in: In Denver — in a pawsitively unsurprising trend — Luna is also the most popular name based on dogs licensed in the city since Jan. 1, according to data provided to Axios by Denver Animal Protection.
- Bella, Milo, Coco and Rocky round out the list.
The big picture: Camp Bow Wow's ranking shows Colorado's favorite dog names largely track with the rest of the nation's, whose top five in 2024 are:
- Luna (you guessed it)
- Charlie
- Bella
- Lucy
- Cooper
Fun fact: Luna fetched the crown nationwide for the third year in a row.
Between the lines: Camp Bow Wow's list is based on a database of ruff-ly 300,000 four-legged friends that stay at its day care centers nationwide.
What to watch: The top naming trends for the rest of the year will include nature- and pop culture-inspired names, food favorites and "out-of-the-box" names, Camp Bow Wow's animal health and behavior expert Erin Askeland predicts.
- In the pop culture-inspired category, Maverick had the highest year-over-year increase, while Goose ranked third — both of which are inspired by the 2022 movie "Top Gun: Maverick."
- When it comes to food, Peanut, Olive and Biscuit are likely to reign supreme.
