MCA Denver wants you to explore the history of an enduring American icon

• The exhibit features roughly 70 new and existing works from 27 artists, including Asian Americans, Latinos and Native Americans.
• The works are meant to challenge and revise the figure's origins, MCA Denver's director Nora Burnett Abrams said in a statement when the show was announced this summer.

Driving the news: The museum will host a discussion next week with two artists about their project, which focuses on eight Filipinos who were part of "Buffalo Bill's Wild West" shows in 1899 to 1900.

What they're saying: Senior curator Miranda Lash said in a statement that while the cowboy is present in popular culture, "most established narratives fail to acknowledge the wildly diverse histories and lived experiences surrounding this profession."

• For example, historians estimate 1 in 4 cowboys were Black, despite most depictions in popular culture showing them as white.
