Remembering the King's Cleveland comeback: Elvis Presley in 1971

Flashback: Presley, then 36, had revived his career with a legendary 1968 comeback special and returned to touring after a decade dominated by Hollywood movies.

• His 1969 smash "Suspicious Minds" returned him to No. 1, while his concerts evolved into elaborate productions featuring gospel singers, a powerhouse band and an orchestra.

Zoom in: Demand was so intense that promoters added a 2:30pm matinee to his original 8:30pm Cleveland show.

• The two performances drew roughly 21,000 fans combined.

The setlist: Presley delivered classics like "Hound Dog," "Heartbreak Hotel" and "Blue Suede Shoes," alongside covers of Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Proud Mary" and Simon & Garfunkel's "Bridge Over Troubled Water."

What they said: Legendary Plain Dealer rock critic Jane Scott described Presley as a "black tornado" who stormed the stage in a gold-trimmed jumpsuit and red-lined cape.

• She also noted his playful banter and self-deprecating humor.

Fun fact: Cleveland radio station WIXY aired a 12-hour Elvis retrospective that day.

The big picture: Presley returned to Cleveland in June 1974, but his health deteriorated in subsequent years.

• He died in August 1977 at age 42.
