It may not be October yet, but scary season has arrived.
State of play: Several of Northeast Ohio's most popular haunted houses open this weekend.
Here's everything you need to know about the biggest and scariest venues:
The intrigue: Performers from the Legion of Terror improv troupe make each trip through the Broadview Heights haunt unpredictable, with different themes throughout the season.
When: Through Oct. 31; 8pm-midnight Fridays and Saturdays and 8-10pm Sundays starting Sept. 27.
Where: 1010 Towpath Road, Broadview Heights.
Cost: Tickets start at $20.
The intrigue: The sprawling 58-acre Medina attraction combines a milelong haunted hayride, walking trail and haunted house.
When: Select nights through Oct. 31; hours vary.
Where: 1662 Medina Road, Medina.
Cost: Tickets start at $35.
The intrigue: The Ohio State Reformatory provides the backdrop for twisted inmates, guards and other creatures lurking inside the historic prison.
When: Sept. 25-Nov. 1; opens at 6:45pm Fridays through Sundays.
Where: 100 Reformatory Road, Mansfield.
Cost: Tickets vary by date.
The intrigue: The Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds scare-fest features multiple haunted attractions, plus escape rooms and other add-ons.
When: Select nights, Sept. 25-Oct. 31.
Where: 19201 E. Bagley Road, Middleburg Heights.
Cost: Tickets vary by night.
🏫 Haunted Schoolhouse & Laboratory
The intrigue: Two longtime Akron haunts come together, taking visitors through the multistory Haunted Schoolhouse and neighboring Haunted Laboratory.
When: Select nights (generally weekends) through Nov. 7.
Where: 1300 Triplett Blvd., Akron.
Cost: Tickets vary by date and entry time.
🧑🌾 Spooky Ranch
The intrigue: Five attractions include a haunted hayride, Haunted Barn, Extreme Nightmares, Blood Slingers Saloon and Monster Vision in 3D.
When: Select nights through Nov. 1.
Where: 19066 East River Road, Columbia Station.
Cost: Tickets start at $25.
The intrigue: The Hudson Jaycees' nonprofit haunt has been scaring Northeast Ohioans since 1972 with a maze filled with live actors and monsters.
- Lights-on matinees offer trick-or-treating without the full scare treatment.
When: Select nights through Oct. 31.
Where: 2250 Barlow Road, Hudson.
Cost: Regular admission starts at $15; kids' matinees are $5 or a donation of a new, unopened toy.
The intrigue: Chardon's Pioneer Waterland transforms into a scare park with six haunted houses, a haunted trail and burlap-sack races down its dry water slides.
When: Sept. 25-Oct. 24; Fridays and Saturdays.
Where: 10661 Kile Road, Chardon.
Cost: Admission starts at $25.
The intrigue: Cedar Point goes all-in on Halloween, mixing family-friendly daytime activities with haunted mazes, scare zones and roaming monsters after dark.
When: Select nights through Nov. 1.
Where: 1 Cedar Point Drive, Sandusky.
Cost: Ticket prices vary by date.
