CMSD's top academic officer is leaving

Flashback: That included a controversial budget-cutting move to shorten the school day and standardize the district's academic calendar in 2025, plus the academic implementation of its Building Brighter Futures plan.

Driving the news: Florence will depart at the end of September for an unspecified opportunity in her "home district," Morgan told staff in a memo obtained by Axios.

• "While we are sorry to see her leave CMSD, we are excited for Dr. Florence and wish her tremendous success in this next chapter," Morgan wrote.
• Florence previously served as assistant superintendent for teaching and learning in Atlanta and spent much of her career in Alabama.

What's next: Megan Traum, a 20-plus-year CMSD veteran and an academic strategic adviser, will serve as interim chief academic officer while the district launches a national search for a permanent replacement, Morgan said.
