I purchased a Cavs partial-season ticket package for the first time this year, ponying up months ago when I first suspected LeBron James might retire in wine and gold.
The big picture: Watching LeBron has been the centerpiece of my life's sports fandom, and the opportunity to see him up close during a presumed farewell tour with family and friends at my side felt well worth the investment.
Reality check: The gamble didn't pay off. LeBron is now a Philadelphia 76er.
- I've still got 19 home games to cheer on Donovan Mitchell and company.
State of play: The Cavs full regular season schedule was released last week. My package is "Half Season B," which includes a number of matchups with the class of the NBA. Here are five I'm especially looking forward to:
🐺 Minnesota Timberwolves, Oct. 26
The intrigue: The Cavs' second home game promises to be electric. The high-flying Wolves have one of basketball's most telegenic athletes (Anthony Edwards) and his new running mate — walking highlight reel LaMelo Ball.
🗽 New York Knicks, Nov. 7
The intrigue: The reigning champs come to Rocket Arena for an Eastern Conference Finals rematch.
🏔️ Denver Nuggets, Jan. 9
The intrigue: Denver's Nikola Jokić is one of the most jaw-dropping players to see live, even from Loudville. His passing and touch around the basket are pure sorcery.
🛞 Detroit Pistons, Jan. 27
The intrigue: NBA Rivals Week alert!
🔔 Philadelphia 76ers, March 1
The intrigue: At last, The Return of the King.
- It would've been a dream to see LeBron 19 times, but at least I'll get to see him once.
