Browns refuse to admit the obvious at quarterback

State of play: Second-year quarterback Shedeur Sanders has outperformed veteran Deshaun Watson in training camp.

• Sanders had thrown six touchdowns to just one interception through Tuesday, while Watson had completed three touchdowns and thrown six interceptions.

Yes, but: The NFL Network reported Tuesday that Monken still plans to start either Sanders or Watson in the team's preseason opener Aug. 15, with the other expected to start the second preseason game Aug. 22.

• He won't make a final decision until the lead-up to the team's last preseason game Aug. 27.

Between the lines: Cleveland traded away Myles Garrett, which seemed to signal it's time to look towards the future and the team's youth.

• Monken's lack of decision keeps the franchise in the wreckage of the Deshaun Watson trade — one of the worst in NFL history.

The other side: Monken said last week he won't base his decision on early practices, per Yahoo Sports.

• "We're just getting it in, letting the guys compete, see where we're at, that's at all positions."

The bottom line: Thinking Watson will finally bounce back from multiple years of poor play and injuries to become the player he was six years ago is naïve, to say the least.
