HBO's new Earth, Wind & Fire doc chronicles a musical revolution

• The film, directed and produced by Questlove, looks at the history of the groundbreaking Chicago funk act, which has performed in Northeast Ohio more than 20 times over the years.

The intrigue: The film centers on the late Maurice White, the Chicago musician whose blend of spirituality and genre-defying sounds laid the foundation for Earth, Wind & Fire.

• The doc also features interviews with living members of the group, as well as celebrities like Stevie Wonder, Lionel Richie, ex-President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama.

Zoom in: Earth, Wind & Fire's 2000 Rock Hall induction is featured briefly towards the documentary's end.

• There's also an interview with photographer Bruce Talamon, whose photos of the group from the 1970s were a huge part of the Rock Hall's 2022 "Hotter Than July" exhibition.

What they're saying: "Earth, Wind & Fire had the capacity to reimagine and reset limits," Barack Obama says in the film.

• "They just decided, 'You know what? We're going up to the sky.'"
