Ohio immigration jail vigils continue amid ICE detention scrutiny

• Vigils will take place at the Mahoning County and Geauga County jails on Thursday, then the Northeast Ohio Correctional Center, Butler County Jail and Corrections Center of Northwest Ohio on Saturday.

What they're saying: Runa Guzman is the founder of Toledo-based grassroots organization 4winds419, which provides services to vulnerable populations.

• "We [organized] this vigil because no human being deserves to be locked away in inhumane detention conditions, separated from their loved ones, and treated as disposable by a system built on fear and punishment," Guzman, who participated in the Seneca County Jail vigil, said in a statement.

The big picture: Ohio ICE detention has been in the spotlight over the past week after a lawsuit was filed on behalf of a detainee at Butler County Jail, alleging abuse by a guard.

• Butler County Jail, which was also accused of physical abuse of immigrants by guards in 2020, did not comment to the Ohio Capital Journal on the specific allegations.
• "The Butler County Sheriff's Office remains committed to the safe, secure, and professional operation of the Butler County Jail," said a statement issued by the sheriff's office.
