Loud boom across Northeast Ohio likely caused by meteor

• The Cleveland office of the NWS received no reports of meteorites hitting the ground and suggested that it may have fully burned up while entering the atmosphere.

What they're saying: "We do not have any specifics on the meteor characteristics at this time," NWS meteorologist Doug Kahn told Axios just before 11am.

• "We suspect the loud noise was due to the meteor breaking the sound barrier."

Zoom out: Meteors travel at extremely high speeds — as fast as 160,000 miles per hour — and the air in front of them can't get out of the way smoothly.

• The violently compressed air builds up into a shock wave — a sudden, dramatic change in pressure and temperature.

What we're hearing: Phones were ringing off the hook and group chats were buzzing across the region all morning as people sought to explain the sound.

• A security camera at the Olmsted Falls City Schools' bus garage captured the meteor in flight.
• And a NWS meteorologist in Pittsburgh caught a video of the meteor flying overhead.
