Cuyahoga County, like the rest of the country, is seeing a massive surge in flu cases, many of them attributed to the so-called "super flu."
Driving the news: There were 90 flu-related hospitalizations during the week ending Dec. 27, up from 70 during the prior week, according to data from the Cuyahoga County Board of Health.
Emergency visits due to flu-like symptoms went from 358 to 479.
Flashback: The county is on pace to have a similar flu season to last year, when hospitalizations peaked in February.
The big picture: Nationwide, new CDC data shows that there's been at least 7.5 million illnesses, 81,000 hospitalizations and 3,100 deaths from the flu so far this season.
Many of these cases have been tied to "subclade K" ā a variant of the H3N2 virus, which is a subtype of influenza A.
