Cleveland's newest affordable homes are powered by the sun

State of play: LMM now owns and operates 33 affordable units, with three more coming next year.

Between the lines: The rooftop solar panels have not been installed, but the homes will be energy-efficient and fully electric when complete.

• They were built in partnership with PadSmart, a local energy-efficient housing company created by the founder of Hyland Software.

Zoom in: Each 500-square-foot unit includes a kitchenette and bathroom, and will be furnished and ready by year's end.

• Tenants will be LMM's low-income clients who have faced barriers to housing.

What they're saying: "When you are in an LMM house, you are home," said Michael Sering, LMM's chief program officer.

• Cuyahoga County Executive Chris Ronayne called the project "the right thing for residents and the right thing for our climate."

What's next: The Cuyahoga Land Bank partnered on the project and owns the vacant lots on Luther adjacent to the duplexes.

• Land Bank CEO Ricardo León said he hopes the Solar Housing project becomes a model for future development.
