Ohio to honor Toni Morrison with yearlong celebration

Driving the news: "Beloved: Ohio Celebrates Toni Morrison" will run from Feb. 18, 2026 to Feb. 18, 2027, starting on Morrison's birthday in Columbus and ending a year later in her hometown of Lorain.

The big picture: The initiative coincides with America250, a national commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.

• It's spearheaded by Ohio Humanities with support from Literary Cleveland, the Ohioana Library, the Toni Morrison Society and others.

Zoom in: Signature events are planned in each region of the state.

• Local partners will host readings, writing contests, author talks, film screenings and performances inspired by Morrison's work.

What they're saying: "Our ambition is for every person in Ohio — young and old — to engage with Toni Morrison's life, literature, and legacy over the next year," said Literary Cleveland executive director Matt Weinkam in a press release.

• "This is our opportunity to celebrate the greatest artist in our state's history."

What's next: The Toni Morrison festivities are part of a bumper crop of literary programming on the horizon in Northeast Ohio.
