Chubby Checker turns down Rock Hall, holds his own induction

The intrigue: The 83-year-old said he declined the Rock Hall's invitation after being told he would not be able to perform.

• Instead, Checker staged his own "induction" last month during a show in Des Plaines, Illinois, where he was presented with his Rock Hall trophy and gave an acceptance speech.

What they're saying: "You run into things that you didn't run into when you were not an older person," Checker said.

• "I told my manager, I said, 'Make sure when we go to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and the induction that I'm doing what I love doing the most, being in front of an audience. A live audience, not a television audience.'"
• Checker instead booked a concert somewhere else the same night as the inductions.

Between the lines: Checker is the second member of the class of 2025 to turn down the invitation.

• Carol Kaye said in June she was "declining" the honor.

What's next: The Rock Hall will announce a guest list and ticket information for the ceremony in the coming weeks.
