President Trump's recent comments on the name of Cleveland's baseball team seemingly came out of nowhere — but the subject has been on local minds for quite some time.
Catch up quick: On Sunday, Trump posted to Truth Social calling for the Washington Commanders (formerly the Redskins) and the Cleveland Guardians (formerly the Indians) to revert to their previous names.
🗣️ We asked for your thoughts:
Ben J.: I don't think it's worth the time or brain capacity to relitigate the name change. Everything but the logo has remained the same. And if through the process the team now offends less people, I think it's great.
Alan A.: The name Indians was bad and is bad. Chief Wahoo was bad and it is bad. I was thrilled when they changed the name. Guardians is inoffensive to everyone except for stone pillars that seem to be honored with the recognition.
Tim B.: Only lunatic woke leftists wanted the name change. Take a poll; it will be at least 75%. They are and will always be the Indians. No woke lunatic leftist can make us call them anything else.
Lois A.: We were so relieved when the ghastly Chief Wahoo image and name were changed! The fact that Donald Trump is stirring the pot (no doubt in order to divert from the Epstein scandal) should be all the more reason to remain with the Guardians.
Fred C.: My goodness, the most important part of our baseball team's name is the first word — Cleveland. It's time to move on.
Linda L.: The name never should have been changed from Indians to Guardians in the first place. It was a political stunt. Our land belonged to Indians from day one. I respect Indian groups along with everyone I know.
- I have NEVER in my life heard anyone speak badly or trash the Indian people or their culture. As children, we learn about Indians from an early age and continue learning throughout our lifetime. It was never racist!!! This name change was a mistake from day one. Why is Atlanta's name still the Braves?
Chris S.: I think we have moved past this debate (Or should have by now)! The name that is most important is "Cleveland!" At least they aren't the Baltimore Guardians.
Edward A.: Cleveland Guardians name change suggestion is just a political diversion. The President is just trying to get us to look away from what is really going on. Let's move on!
